VITA, meaning life, was the winning entry in the “An ADU for U” competition sponsored by City of Raleigh, AARP, and Better Living Design Institute. The compact, yet spacious home is designed to fit within multiple site context in the city from tight urban lots to larger suburban lots. The ADU is designed to accomodate aging-in-place and includes many design features outlined by the Better Living Design Insititute.

The simple gable form and clean details allow the home to seemlessly integrate into many neighborhoods. A covered porch serves as an exterior gathering space as well as an entry. Interior features include vaulted ceilings in the public spaces, a full kitchen, built-in dining area, and large windows to create a sense of openness.

Affordable construction is an important aspect of the design. A slab on grade foundation, simple roof forms using standard lumber, and widely available off-the-shelf materials contribute to quick, affordable construction.

VITA is available to purchase as a stock plan set and is included in the City of Raleigh ADU Fast Track program as a pre-reviewed building plan that is ready for permit. If required, any time spent on design customizations, site planning, and assistance with permitting will be billed at an hourly rate in addition to the plan set fee.
