Pond House

Location: Durham, NC
Completed: Unbuilt
Size: 2,850 sqft

Pond house is nestled on the edge of an old-growth southern forest overlooking the grazing field and drinking pond of a retired farm in rural North Carolina. The home features a series of offset bars which frame views and create outdoor courtyards.

The simple gable forms and timber facades are inspired by the agrarian history of the land. Windows are selectively placed to frame views. On one side of the home the views are narrow and frame the forest, on the other the views are large and allow panoramic vistas of the field and pond.

Old, crumbling dry stacked stone walls are present on the site, evidence of the site’s history of animal grazing. They also inspired the new stone wall which retains the earth, allowing the home to rest gently and extend out above it.
