The new STEM and humanities classrom building replaced two outdated classroom buildings and anchored the edge of the primary outdoor space and courtyard on the Durham Academy Upper School campus. The building houses 23 classrooms and labs, a maker space and robotics lab, a two story gathering space, and outdoor break-out spaces.

Exterior materials of brick and corrugated steel panels are thoughtfully articulated to express the interior functions and allow large expanses of window in each classroom. Natural light in classroom and lab spaces was an important element in providing healthy spaces for students.

Interior details and natural materials are focused on areas where students and staff interact in a tactile way. Elements like handrails on the grand stair are thoughtfully crafted and natuarl wood panels provide comfortable spaces for study or rest.
